Tonight is the night, in Philadelphia, the home of extreme. WWE Extreme Rules, on paper, seems like it will be a very interesting and entertaining night of action. At this time, there are only six matches on the card. This means they’ll either be a match or two added in, or those in charge plan on giving the talent all the time they’ll need to fill the entire 3 hour broadcast.
So who wins the first women’s ladder match for the Raw Women’s Championship? What kind of carnage will take place in the first ever Fight Pit match? And most importantly, will Bray Wyatt make his long awaited return to the WWE?
Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Match
The Brawling Brutes -vs- The Imperium
I have been very impressed with the chemistry Sheamus and Gunther have shown in the ring. Last night on Smackdown, Sheamus came within inches of winning his first Intercontinental Championship, but it was ruined by outside interference from the Imperium. I expect Sheamus to eventually win the title, possibly at Crown Jewel, and it all starts with the Brawling Brutes getting the victory tonight.
Winners: The Brawling Brutes
I Quit Match
Edge -vs- Finn Balor w/ Judgment Day
This should be an absolutely amazing match between these two. Add in the extra “I Quit” stipulation and it could definitely steal the show. This could go several different ways, but I don’t see any of the options being Edge saying “I quit”. So either Edge makes Finn give up, or either man gets locked into a hold and simply passes out. I would book this to have Finn be the one to quit, as it doesn’t hurt him to do so. However, I could easily see creative wanting to keep both men looking strong after tonight.
There is a wild card factor in this match by the name of AJ Styles. They’ve been brushing him up against Balor and the Judgment Day for weeks now. Would he ultimately join his former Bullet Club brother in his new group, or will he stay fighting against the Judgment Day? Of course we all know how Edge comes back to wrestle a match and then goes away for several months, so could that happen again too? I think this match completely breaks down at some point, with Priest, Dominik, Rey Mysterio, and Styles all getting involved. During the melee, I think the Rated R Superstar gets his revenge on Finn Balor.
Winner: Edge
Fight Pit Match - Special Referee: Daniel Cormier
Matt Riddle -vs- Seth Rollins
Yes I know the full name Rollins goes by. Yes I think it’s one of the dumbest names ever. No I will not be referring to him by it.
Having said that, this is going to be another great match between these two men. I have been very anti-Riddle, but lately he has really started growing on me more. I just thought the gimmick and the promos were dumb, but when he starts getting more serious, I just buy into him a whole lot more.
Rollins, on the other hand, is simply money whenever he steps into the ring. At some point I’d love to see Seth get away from the goofy, non-sensical, laughing promos, but the guy is still one of the top 3 money draws for the company.
So the rules of the Fight Pit Match are simple. There is no escaping the cage. You can only win by knockout or submission. There are two obvious things to notice here. First is, Riddle is the only one of these two that have been in a fight pit match, so it’ll be interesting to see how Rollins adapts. Second is, they have had Riddle get beaten at every turn, so at some point, he has to get his ultimate win. And what better way than in his style of match? There’s no escape. Only survival.
Winner: Matt Riddle by Submission
Strap Match
Drew McIntyre -vs- Karrion Kross w/ Scarlett
Karrion Kross has looked very impressive since coming back. I could definitely see him as a World Champion at some point. Drew McIntyre brings it in every big match he works. This should be another explosive and exciting match.
The rules of the strap match (let’s hope this is a traditional one), is the first man to drag his opponent and touch all four corners consecutively wins.
Much like losing to Roman Reigns in Cardiff didn’t hurt McIntyre any, losing to Kross here won’t hurt him either. Kross needs the win to continue his momentum. I look for Drew to almost have the match won until something (we’ll cover this later) distracts him. Karrion will be the one to touch all four turnbuckles tonight.
Winner: Karrion Kross
Smackdown Women’s Championship Match
Extreme Rules Match
Liv Morgan (c) -vs- Ronda Rousey
I’ll be honest, this is the one I’m most interested in, cause, well let’s face it, it’s Liv Morgan and it’s Ronda Rousey. I could watch either of these two all day.
It’s Extreme Rules, which means anything goes. On the surface, it looks like it would be right up Ronda’s alley. However, Liv has been showing a very extreme side lately, using kendo sticks, brawling in the aisles, and going through tables. It’s been a nice change of pace for someone who, let’s face it, has two fluky wins over the Baddest Woman on the Planet.
There’s only one way I would book this thing, and it’s because I’ve been calling for it for over a year. That would be having Shayna Baszler come out and cost Liv the title, aligning with Ronda. After tonight, Shayna would be Ronda’s enforcer, doing all her dirty work and trying to keep Liv away from the title as long as she can. This would allow you to build this new version of Liv back up and have her chase the title again.
Winner: And NEW Smackdown Women’s Champion - Ronda Rousey (with help from Shayna Baszler)
Raw Women’s Championship Match
Ladder Match
Bianca Belair (c ) -vs- Bayley w/ Damage Control
If I were the WWE, I would make this match the main event of the evening. These two women absolutely deserve it. Plus with the surprise I predict will happen, it has to go on last.
So let’s set the table. This past Monday night, Damage Control seemed to have injured Asuka. They took out Alexa Bliss. So the Raw Women’s Champion is all alone going into this match….or is she?
Without what I think will happen, I would have had Bayley win the title and end the show up on the ladder with Dakota and Iyo on each side of her. And if my predicted surprise doesn’t happen, I think this is what will take place.
However, I think Bianca will have something else up her sleeve. At some point, Dakota and Iyo will look to get involved. And that’s when we’ll see the return of Sasha Banks and Naomi. They’ll run down, even the odds, and this shock will cost Bayley the match and the championship. Plus it gives Bianca two allies in her fight against Damage Control that make a lot more sense than Asuka and Alexa.
Winner: And STILL Raw Women’s Champion - Bianca Belair
To Bray…..or not to Bray
So now to the big surprise of Extreme Rules. It’s all led up to this. Let’s face it, if it’s anything but the return of Bray Wyatt, the fans in Philly are likely to riot. And don’t think they won’t do it. But if it is Bray Wyatt, how does he return? In what form? And in what way makes sense?
So I looked at the entire card to see what match would make the most sense for Wyatt’s return. You can’t just bring him out in between matches. That would have zero logic and would build to nothing. His return has to have an impact.
So the one I came up with was the McIntyre-Kross match. As I mentioned above, there will be a distraction that keeps Drew from almost winning the match. At first I thought it might be Scarlett, but what better distraction than the return of Bray Wyatt? That would certainly stop Drew in his tracks, but Kross would not get sidetracked by the return.
So that’s my prediction. Bray Wyatt returns and it happens during the Drew McIntyre-Karrion Kross match.
